Not only will we be focusing on the World cup and tracking South Africa's progress, but we will also be learning through International Arts week, Nelson Mandela and why people in different countries were and are treated differently.

Making new football shirts for the South African football team

On Thursday18th June (Yesterday) we made football shirts. We had to design them first. All of the designs  looked really complicated and difficult to paint on fabric. We had to think of the national animals and symbols of South Africa. We were given different colour tee-shirts that we had to work on. At the end of it they looked amazing. Feel free to come and look at them in the hall after school time.

Making South Africa Masks

On Monday and Tuesday 14th and 15th June,we made masks for international arts week.We started with an ordinary mask and then we soaked up mod rock then put it on and it dried over night and then the next day we started painting them.We all had design of what our masks would look like and then we painted them on and waited for them to dry. Then we finished and did other things.

National Anthem Verse Making

In International Arts Week we were composing a new verse of the South African National Anthem as you've probably guessed, it is our country.

We first kept listening to the National anthem to get the beat, tune and the syllables of each line which was 9 syllables in all of the first three lines and the last line was 14 syllables.

Once we had done that we had to come up with the lyrics- that was quite difficult! After that it got even more difficult when we had to compose the music for it by listening to the National anthem and copying the tune. A good thing was that the 1st and 3rd line was exactly the same. (Phew that makes it bit easier). Some of them are still not complete including mine but there getting there and the finished ones sound really good.

Masks of South Africa

On Monday 15th, we started are work for international arts week and first we started of with the best kind of art possible, masks! It was hard work for everyone as we almost had to start from scratch!

We had to use mod rock because we were moulding the masks from another mask which you could only paint, but it was a good thing to use as a mould template. Then we had to wait for the mod rock to dry, then when it was, we could paint!

We all ended up with wonderful finished products even if they were only strips of painted mod rock they were all great! Come and see them on Friday 18th of June!

Designing football shirts

On Thursday 17th of June we designed football shirts for South Africa. First we planned them on a piece of paper and then we made them on fabric which was quite hard, although it worked well for most people.
We all had different base colours to start off with and I had black, the colours didn't show up well on black so I had to do lots of layers.

Creating new South African T-shirts

This week in Komodo dragon Base we have been doing a lot of art activities  ! We have been given South Africa for the world cup so we have been learning about South Africa.

We have created new football shirts for South Africa football team ! The whole class loved it, the T-Shirts  turned out to be really well !
look how good they are !
Plus it was Miss Wood's last day and it was Emily's Birthday  . { We are going to miss Miss Wood }

Designing football T-shirts

On Thursday 17th of June, we designed football T-shirts! First we planned our design, we also had different base colours, we had red, green, black, yellow and blue. Then we painted our designs with special paints. Then we waited for it to dry. It was the best activity!!!

South African traditional Zulu tribe clay!!!!!!

On Tuesday afternoon, we made some really funky clay models based on the South African Zulu tribe.  First, we had a go at making coils and then we began making a slab for the base of our models.  It took me ages to make mine. In the end, my shield was too big for the base so I had to make a prop as there was only 7 minutes left!!!!!!!!!!  Some people made jewelry but most people made shields!!!  Later on in the afternoon, we painted our models.  I painted mine brown then added some yellow to make a bronze colour!!!

Jewellery made out of Clay.

On Tuesday 14th June 2010 Year 6 Made Zulu tribe jewellery out of Clay! First we played around with the clay followed by making coils! It was a fantastic day
everyone had fun,and no one moaned about their clay! Even though some of the clay was a bit
dry.

Soon after we got to make our jewellery,it was very hard because every time you went to roll it,it all cracked and you would have to start again. although there was a good side to this because in the end it turned out Perfect!
See what I mean by they turned out perfect!

Arts Week in Komodo Dragon Base

Music - Composing!

On Wednesday in Year 6 we did music! To do the really cool activity we used 2Simple to recreate the music to the official South African national anthem! Doing that was tricky but extremely fun to do. Before that part, however, everybody (as pairs) wrote a brand new verse for the National Anthem! I loved this part the most - would you like to know mine? Well, of course you do! It goes like this:

To-geth-er as the rainbow nation,
We all de-serve the equal rights,
Through the green grass and the scorching sun,
We are all u-ni-ted through out, we are South Africa!

What do you think? Take a look at these pictures too!

So, that was just ONE fun lesson in Year 6!

Welcome to South Africa in Komodo Dragon Base.

We have already strated our learning journey by investigating Cape Town in South Africa. We have learnt how to measure distances in an atlas and convert these to metric and imperial measurements. Today we are looking at different currencies in the world.

Komodo Dragon Base are also excited about South Africa's first game this afternoon - although we have just found out the they are ranked 83rd in the world!!! Come on South Africa!
